Livestrong Mr Armstrong
Lance was pretty dam impressive this tour. In fact I think more impressive than other tours. To take 3 years off at that age and in that sport and come back to a podium finish is incredible. Adding to it he played the team guy role to perfection despite the fact that he must have been busting to be back in the leadership role. I’m not an over the top Lance fan by any means. In fact I’m rather indifferent. Perhaps due to all the crap about doping in cycling. Fact remains though that he has never tested positive and probably gets tested more than anyone on the planet. I want to believe that his story is that good and i think everyone does so until otherwise i have decided to chuck away any cynicism about the sport and simply enjoy the ride.
I think what he has done is truly incredible and he has redefined a sport by winning 7 straight tours. Ironically however it is this tour that has elevated my respect. I think he showed more by coming 3rd after a 3 year lay off than by winning 7. The other irony is that I think by not winning he will do more for his admiration amongst the French population than by winning. He showed that he was human this time around and he showed that he has a massive respect for the sport and the underlying culture that exists in it. AC defined himself as team leader and the best rider and Lance did the right thing by supporting it, at least during the stages…..it would be fun to be a fly on the wall in the back room!
So I say Livestrong Mr Armstrong. I will look forward to watching things unfold next year. I had a renewed interest in the tour this year and as much as I’m embarrassed to admit it, I have to say it is because of Lance.
